Barnoldswick Clock
Barnoldswick Clock
Type: Townscape
Item Location: Albert Road, Barnoldswick BB18 5AA

Description:

Barnoldswick has a unique clock which uses the 12 different letters of the town's name instead of numbers.

With twelve different letters, Barnoldswick is one of the longest place names in Britain without a repeated letter.

Barnoldswick resident Pamela Oddie came up with the idea for the clock using these twelve letters when the town council was looking for a design for a Barnoldswick mug to commemorate the millennium in 2000.

The design's use of both a red and a white rose refers to the Lancashire/Yorkshire border status of Barnoldswick and the town's continuing battles in the Wars of the Roses.more

Flags
Flags
Type: Townscape
Submitted by:David Whipp
Item Location: Barnoldswick BB18

Description:

Colourful flags often fly when Barnoldswick holds an outdoor event.

The flags were made in 2007, with local children helping to create designs for the flags.

The designs are based on planes and butterflies.

Made from polysilk, different colours are used with each design which looks fantastic when they are fluttering in a breeze.

The flags are particularly vibrant with the sun shining through them.

Good times to see the flags are at the Valley Gardens Fair (May 19th, 2012) and during Barnoldswick Beach in August.

Our Town Square
Our Town Square
Type: Townscape
Submitted by:Ken Ranson
Item Location: Town Square, Barnoldswick BB18 5AA

Description:

I can sit for hours and gaze around,
At the folk that I can see there.
Some I know and some I don't,
That's what we see in our Town Square

School-kids on their dinner break,
Mingling here and there.
Lots of noise and flirting,
That's what we have in our Town Square

The smell of bacon butties ,
Comes wafting through the air.
The smell of fish and chips as well,
That's what we smell in our Town Square

There's a tick and a tock from the Millennium clock,
And a coo-coo from the pigeons out there.more
