Old Ghyll Brow
Old Ghyll Brow
Type: Beauty Spot
Submitted by:David Whipp
Item Location: Ghyll Brow, Skipton Road, Barnoldswick BB18 6JH

Description:

A remnant of Barnoldswick's old road to Skipton remains at Ghyll Brow.

The short stretch of old tarmac is flanked by an ancient hedgerow and ivy covered trees.

This stretch of road, together with Coates Lane and Greenberfield Lane, with humped back bridges and tight bends, was the main route towards Thornton in Craven and Skipton before a new road was built through Rolls-Royce's Welfare Centre and a disused limestone quarry in the 1950s.

Although only a few metres from the modern road, the old road is now a pleasant backwater, with good views of Greenberfield Locks and the drumlin field beyond.more

Our Town Square
Our Town Square
Type: Townscape
Submitted by:Ken Ranson
Item Location: Town Square, Barnoldswick BB18 5AA

Description:

I can sit for hours and gaze around,
At the folk that I can see there.
Some I know and some I don't,
That's what we see in our Town Square

School-kids on their dinner break,
Mingling here and there.
Lots of noise and flirting,
That's what we have in our Town Square

The smell of bacon butties ,
Comes wafting through the air.
The smell of fish and chips as well,
That's what we smell in our Town Square

There's a tick and a tock from the Millennium clock,
And a coo-coo from the pigeons out there.more

Pickles Hippings
Pickles Hippings
Type: Stream
Submitted by:David Whipp
Item Location: see location on map BB18 5QQ

Description:

Hippings is another name for stepping stones. Pickles Hippings is a footpath, or ginnel, which runs from Esp Lane to Calf Hall Lane across a shallow valley.

The footpath now crosses the stream between the two lanes by a footbridge. Much of Pickles Hippings is set paved with local sandstone sets.

The section close to Calf Hall Lane is surfaced with bitmac. There are several intriguing stone styles on or beside the footpath.

Pickles Hippings is thought to be close to the site of the abandoned monastery begun by the monks who went on to build Kirkstall Abbey.more
